Here is the provenance for the painting. ("Provenance" refers to where a work of art has been since it left the artist’s hands.)
As you will see, it was originally owned by the artist’s brother, Theo, who was an art dealer. It was purchased from Theo’s widow in 1900. It passed through several collections and ended up at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery in New York, from which MOMA acquired it in 1941, via the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. (Bliss was a very important collector of early 20th-century art.)

The Museum of Modern Art in NYC owns it ( They bought it in the 1940s)

As for how much MOMA paid, I can’t tell you that. The museum may or may not be willing to provide information. Sometimes, museums prefer to keep such figures confidental.
